I live in the small quiet town of Madison situated along the shores of Long Island Sound on the coast of Connecticut. My wife and I have lived here for 47 years and we love this town. When the wind blows from a southerly direction, waves will break on the rock formations that dot our coastline. Such was the case when I did this painting.

I’ve painted this scene along the banks of the Connecticut River a number of times (each a little different). The river flows some 400 miles from the Canadian border south to Long Island Sound in Old Saybrook Ct. Heading north from Old Saybrook just passed Essex Ct is Hamburg Cove. A yellow house sits a the entrance to the cove. Up and down the river everyone know this house.

At the mouth of the Connecticut River sits the borough of Fenwick which is in town of Old Saybrook. It is the least populated borough in the state of Connecticut. Katharine Hepburn was a lifelong resident there until her passing in 2003. She referred to Fenwick as her “little slice of heaven”. It is just the most stunning spot. I loves doing this painting.

We are blessed to have the beautiful Hammonasset State Park here in Madison. You can camp, swim, bike ride and hike the many trails running along the beach and through the treelines that border the marshes. One of those trails takes you to an observation deck that looks out over a bird sanctuary. On the way to the deck there’s a spot were one can pause and take in the distant view of Cedar Island Marina across the marsh.
