I live in the small quiet town of Madison situated along the shores of Long Island Sound on the coast of Connecticut. My wife and I have lived here for 47 years and we love this town. When the wind blows from a southerly direction, waves will break on the rock formations that dot our coastline. Such was the case when I did this painting.

I’ve painted this scene along the banks of the Connecticut River a number of times (each a little different). The river flows some 400 miles from the Canadian border south to Long Island Sound in Old Saybrook Ct. Heading north from Old Saybrook just passed Essex Ct is Hamburg Cove. This yellow house sits at the entrance to the cove. Up and down the river, everyone knows this house.

At the mouth of the Connecticut River sits the borough of Fenwick which is in town of Old Saybrook. It is the least populated borough in the state of Connecticut. Katharine Hepburn was a lifelong resident there until her passing in 2003. She referred to Fenwick as her “little slice of heaven”. It’s just the most stunning spot. I loved doing this painting.

Off the shorling of Madison sits Tuxis Island. Several residents moor their boats between the island and the shore. Typically they use dinghies to reach their boats. Once aboard, they untie their boat and, if the wind is favorable, rair their sails immediately. Alternatively, they may motor out a short distance before raising their sails.

Sometime, on warm humid Summer days, the sky may be clear while off in the distance a cloud begins to grow. These are called Thunderheads. As the cloud builds, the upper portion glows in the sunlight while the lower portion produces a gusty wind and rain shower. These showers while over water are called squalls. If you’re in a small boat you don’t want to be caught in one of these.
